    upgrade from 8.5.3 to 2018.12 ??

    Hello,

I would really appreciate ANY comments regarding the above upgrade.

We have a perfecly working system with 4 x mac pro 6.1, 32GB, D500, OSX 10.11.4, Nitris DX with 8.5.3 connected to our Nexis 100TB v18.6.1.

Our project started late 2018 and will finish end of this year.

Our editors want us (we are technical separtment) to upgrade ALL the workstations to OSX 10.13.6 with MC 2018.12.

As this is an important and very delicate project, does anyone have any feedback as to whether this would be a wise upgrade on a LIVE project ?

Has anyone done such an upgrade ?

    ANY comments greatfully appreciated

    Thank you

    An  immediate couple of thoughts:

    1. Do you/they have any AMA media linked using the QuickTime plugin? The current version will want to use the Avid Generic plugin which may cause some linking issues.

    2. I have had some issues with licence info not travelling well between the Application Manager of old versions and its replacement, Avid Link. I'd reccommed deauthorising before upgrade and reauthorising after.

I have a 8 tb feature project that I have been field testing new releases of mc on with since 8.0 and have had no issues "out side of Borus needing a cash upgrade"  to 2018.2 ...That being said all files are on my drive transcoded no ama linking at all ...

Did a similar thing, but after some research we settled for 2018.5 as there were a lot of buggy versions after that. 2018.12 seem pretty affectied too. Why would you go for that one? Latest 2018.12.3 seem to have ok feedback.

First, I would wonder what features the editors feel are necessary for this upgrade.  In general I would be really nervous about doing that.

Second, you can always set up a test system, backup the project file and see how it goes.  Test all the really important things in your workflow.  And know that in general Avid projects are backward compatible.  BUT, that might not be the case if what the editors are really wanting is the updated Grouping tools that have been introduced.  I would be really surprised if those features are backward compatible.

    Just my opinion.

    Re: upgrade from 8.5.3 to 2018.12 ??

Anyway....we were forced to do the upgrades for editorial reasons.

Firstly we upgraded to 2018.12.5 & OSX 10.12.6, all seemed well at first but we started getting the folowing problems :-

    - Randomly during playback the timeline freezes.....EVERYTHING ELSE WORKS PERFECTLY...source/record monitor, external monitor & audio are ALL normal. The timeline just freezes. When you hit STOP, everything stops but the timeline remains in the same (OLD) position and does not go to the correct position.

    - Random hanging of various systems during playback and they have to force quit. The problem with doing this is that they lose ALL the latest work after autosaving......very annoying !

    - After creating titles using sub cap the titles are saved correctly but every so often when the sequence is being played back the order of a particular title is inverted with the previous / following title.

As we were in Emergency mode we tried swapping hardware but nothing changed. After exploring various other solutions, we were contacted by another client who has the same workflow ( and has the same equipment as us ) as us but his configuration is 2018.11 & OSX 10.13.6. We downgraded to be compatible with him but we are still having the same problems.

Can anyone point us in the right direction please.  Any comments would be greatfully appreciated,

    Thank you

Did you ever find an answer?

I am trying to finish a 10-part 8 hours, very complex, 3-year in the making, non fiction series.

    We are on 8.9.3.

I can't imagine upgrading and that it will just be magically ok. Thousands of AMA links, patches, audio patches, mutliple 16TB arrays, 3rd party plug-ins, 3rd party plug-ins even for some of the AMA way back, Resolve links, Borsi efx pieces, etc.
