timeline transfer from Avid version 2018.12 to 6.5

I need to edit something at home on my 2018.12 system, but then bring it to a shop that is still running 6.5.  Will the older system open my timeline from the newer version?

No, it won't. Projects from older versions are upwards compatible, not vice versa.

Is this a new change? I know in the past I've been able to take Avid Projects from newer software to older vesions. The only issues if there's new features/effects that were used, they may not show up in the older software, but the project will work.

Going from 2018.12 to 6.5 is a big leap back, but I would suspect it would work. If anything, it's at least worth trying. Avid had been pretty good at backwards compatibilty in the past.

The problem is, as you note, newer features won't work and given that many version differences it's questionable at best. But, as you also note, it is probably worth trying. HnC, Stick to stuff that you know is in both versions.

You could try exporting via EDL and then re-import in V6.5?

    Should work fairly well imho.

AMA links would be problematic, same goes for DNxHR footage.

Codecs that existed then will work, some effects might not get recognised, but the timeline should be totally intact.

    Subtitles in Subcap won't work.

It all depends on if stability are importnat to you. It may work it may appear to work or it may cause all sorts of issues.

If I had to do it then I would and would expect to unpick and reolve issues as they present as the job progreses.

Would I chose to take that risk. No way!

With an EDL you lose too much information. If you keep the timeline very simple and avoid fatures added in later versions it may work. But 2 weeks down the line if your tmeline is misbehaving you may regret that chosie.

Re: timeline transfer from Avid version 2018.12 to 6.5

Thanks all.  My #1 concern was, could it open the sequence at all?  Since it sounds like it will, I would then be able to work with tej sequence on the older system and fix any quirks that might arise.

In order to succeed "demote" the sequence(s) before moving the bin, not in front of a system to provide step by step instructions, please press F1 for further info. Moreover, make a new project on the target system with the very same name of the source project (case sensitive), and only move bins, not the all project.

The instructions for demoting can be found here: https://videoeurope.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/AvidMediaComposer-Manual.pdf. Note that this is really meant for color effects. If you've used filters not in the older version, they won't come across (obviously). Also, see this: http://resources.avid.com/SupportFiles/attach/Media_Composer_Effects_and_CC_Guide_8.8.pdf
