Moving a clip vertically on the timeline

I often need to move a clip - typically an audio clip - vertically on the timeline, from one track to another. This is often, though not always caused by the fact that Avid forces me to lay a clip on to a specific track, after which I might want the clip to lay on another track. This need may arise either when the audio clip is the same length as it's appropriate video clip, or after I have edited, so that the audio clip in or out point extends before or after the in/out point on the video clip.

I find that when using the mouse and simply moving the clip vertically, it almost always lands between 1 and 4 frames out of sync to the audio/video clip to which it belongs, necessitating a time-consuming zoom in on the timeline to see the correct position.

Is there a simple keyboard shourcut when moving a clip vertically that prevents the clip being moved from moving horizontally - or that "magnets" the clip being moved to it's partner?

Any words of wisom out there?

Re: Moving a clip vertically on the timeline

You can hold the CTRL key down while moving the clip up/down and it will snap to the head of the video track (or to other edit points in active tracks). See if that works?

Note also that the playhead can be used as a target for snapping in this way so you can park it where you need it and then drag other clips with the CTRL key held down and they will snap to the location of the playhead.

In Media Composer 8.9.3 they added buttons that allow you to move clips vertically.

Command palette > Edit tab > Move Clip Up/Move Clip Down

You are correct! By default it maps to the up/down arrow keys. If you hold the CTRL key then the clip is duplicated... Very useful indeed.
