And not even an Info mail sent to registered users. Super Angry

TMPGEnc now looks like a good alternative, at least for those not wishing to have anything with Adobe.

    Re: Goodbye Sorenson Squeeze

What does that actually mean for Avid users?  I have a version of Squeeze that came with a premanent licence of Avid some time ago.  I assume that will carry on working.  What about the Squeeze that comes with subscription?  Will that stop?

On encoding, I use TMPEG a lot, which is very good, but also check out Handbreak which is a free H.264 encoder.

This is the danger of depending on 3rd party products for needed services. There's no control over continued support, Users had better start looking for new options.

I notice on their internet site that it is not possible for users to download an installer copy for backup purposes, even when logged in to your user account.

    Very poor Customer support.

I suspect that there are too many competing products out there based on free tools like ffmpeg.  When you can get a similar professional quality tool for prices ranging from zero to $25.00 it makes Squeeze hard to justify.

I don't think that this will be the last collapse of suppliers of powerful professional tools in our industry that we will see.

    Re: Goodbye Sorenson Squeeze

I am still wondering what this means practically for Avid users.  It just says "all squeeze services will be stopped".  Does this mean if you have a version that came with a premanent licence that you will not be able to activate it if you need to reinstall?

Presumably systems that have Squeeze on and installed will carry on working.

I don't use it myself, but I have customers that do and occassionally have to rework systems for them so I would like to know what happens then.  We can't help it if a company or product dies, that's life, but what impact will it have.

    Re: Goodbye Sorenson Squeeze

An update to my previous post regarding downloading a copy for backup.

I opened a support ticket at Sorenson about the unavailability of a download link for license owners and was provided with one in a reply mail. It was also stated that Sorenson were working on fixing the issue.

The info link provided in the first post here is no longer valid and has been replaced with the link below, which also offers a link to software downloads - for those wanting/needing one.

    https://www.sorensonsqueeze.com/

There has so far been no information provided regarding doing a fresh install of the software after the EOL date.

Click Squeeze's Help>About. Squeeze includes FFMPEG among its many CODECS. Haven't noticed any devopment of Sorenson's proprietary CODECS in years. For me, it's most attractive feature has been the side by side with/without filters GUI & convenient transcode sample of files. Suspect web video hosting services (e.g. You Tube) built in transcoding services played a part in eroding Squeeze's customer base. How much is speculation. Squeeze's fora had limited traffic for years.

Used Sorenson products since it was a Terran Interactive Cleaner 5 plug-in. Soon to follow Real Media & AltaVista. RIP Squeeze.

Was going to write almost the same, more or less; I've written before over the forums that Squeeze was way overpriced, especially considering that it used to embed a lot of free source code; to cut a long story short, it's not the tough competion, the Company killed the baby just for greed. Does this sound a bell Avid?!?!? Put more money for R&D please! (rant over) See this recent thread if You wish. Sorenson - still relevant?

I'm more and more using HandBrake and/or AnotherGUI, both frontends to FFmpeg, the latter also working with FFmbc, its broadcast fork.
