    Can't update my dongle

    OK, so I updated Media Composer for the first time in months. When I start it up, it says my license has expired, which makes sense as I probably never got around to updating the dongle after I renewed the subscription.

    So I come here and download the Updater.avd file, I follow the instructions to go to the Application Manager and select Licensing to update the dongle.

    And it says:

    "None of your installed products can be licensed via Application Manager. Please visit the Avid Store to buy a new one."

    Meanwhile, it also clearly shows I have a valid perpetual license for Media Composer.

    How do I fix this?

    Oh, yeah, I read through the more detailed instructions linked to from the download page, and it says to check the 'App' page says 'Current' for the Application Manager app, but mine says 'Install' and continues to say 'Install' no matter how many times I install it.

     

    Same for Media Composer.

    Yes. But I can't even get to the point of being able to send it to the dongle.

    So, I solved the immediate problem of updating the dongle. I found the old installers on my hard drive, and reverted to a version of the Application Manager and Media Composer in 2016, so the license check passed. That then showed me the 'update dongle' option in Application Manager and allowed me to update the dongle.

    However, after doing that and installing the latest version of Application Manager and Media Composer, I still don't get the option to update the dongle. I don't know whether that will appear when I renew the subscription and Application Manager realizes that the subscription is newer than the dongle, but it seems pretty bizzare that the documented method of updating the dongle is to go through Application Manager, but the Application Manager apparently only shows the option if it thinks you need to do so.

    Flushing the AppMan cache and restarting the app took care of the issues it was having here.

    We all are under a yearly support contract, right? You may reach out for that support and find that you can get an updater file that works as expected, so that you can begin enjoying your updated dongle and new software. This is what I did a while back.

    Not in front of a system to guide You step by step, but if You search the AppMan menu You'll find Your way around.

    Yeah, I eventually found it hidden under 'Preferences', which made no sense to me.

    I noticed in the logs that it's trying to find some directories that don't exist when it starts up, but creating those made no difference.

    Sadly, after renewing my subscription and getting yet another dongle updater for next year, even the old version of the Application Manager no longer shows the 'update dongle' option.

    OK, I uninstalled Application Manager and Media Composer, then installed Application Manager 2.5.12 and Media Composer 8.7.2, and lo! as if by magic, the dongle update option reappeared.

    After updating the dongle, I upgraded Application Manager to the latest version, and the dongle update option is still there. But I wouldn't bet on still having it after I upgrade Media Composer to the latest version.

    Yeah, the update dongle option mysteriously disappeared as soon as I installed 8.10. Media Composer is also no longer listed under 'Apps'. In fact, nothing is.
