    Universal Mastering + AJA I/O Express ?

On my PC, I need to Open my 23.976 Project’s Sequence from inside a 29.97 Project (using Open Bin) in order to See AJA HDMI output in a consumer monitor. (not capable of displaying 23.98)

That works OK, but I am wondering if Symphony Option somehow makes AJA output work directly from Digital Cut Tool inside the original 23.976 Project, thanks to “Universal Mastering”. Anyone know?

Universal Mastering only works in Digital Cut, not regular playback. Also, it requires Nitris DX. Maybe DNxIO works as well nowadays, but bot any 3rd party I/O device.

Re: Universal Mastering + AJA I/O Express ?

Thanks, Job! I subsequently found your post on the subject t:

    http://www.jobterburg.nl/Publications/UniversalMastering_v1.2.pd

which was very helpful and appreciated.

    * Now that Symphony is a one-time $99. U.S. option, I am hoping that

AJA (including my trusty I/O Express) & Avid can find a way to permit low-cost HDMI monitoring of 23.98 project Clips during

Symphony color correct. (To assist Symphony CC learning and “finishing” pro-sumer, non-commercial 23.976 projects)

    Or am I missing something?

Question: If I shoot and link/transcode into

a 23.976 Project, then do my edits/trims and even titles, stabilizations, etc in a 59.94 Project, (which as I noted above

WILL play out of AJA I/O Express via HDMI) is there a way to get  that 59.94 Sequence back into its original 23.976

Project with all timeline clips available for normal trimming, etc?

    I should try that someday...

Bottom Line: Symphony Option is now a great, affordable tool, but is there a “low-budget” 23.976 monitoring solution as well?

Re: Universal Mastering + AJA I/O Express ?

I found a couple of affordable consumer monitors that accept 23.976/24.000 over HDMI. All my Samsungs do.

Other than that, is there any way to force the AJA Io to output 29.97 from a 23.976 source? Don’t have my AJA box anymore, bur I’m fairly sure one of my BMD boxes could do that amd pretty sure Nitris DX allows it as a cross-conversion.

I will follow up on that Samsung tip... if you happen to recall any model numbers, I’ll thank you again profusely.

I was on phone with AJA tech support yesterday (they are spectacular) and did all sorts of things: new drivers, then a better but older driver which allowed Win7 Pro use, and also an I/O Express firmware upgrade. So we covered many things but we got nowhere on output to the HDMI port on what is normally my Dell PC’s single monitor (using DVI port) until I swapped from 23.976 Project to 59.94. (I’m on v8.8.5 PC with I/O Express).

I too *thought* the AJA unit could convert 23.98 to 59.94, but yesterday I had no luck. I’m going to pursue it again, with their help, to get a definitive answer.

Thanks again for that Symphony tutorial link and your PDF.

I think the issue is that your Dell monitor is a computer monitor that does not accept 24p. It would probably also not be an ideal monitor to use for grading, as it would need to be calibrated for Rec709.

Yes, absolutely. I have found that there is a “down convert” function on my AJA I/O Express which spits out 525i 29.97 from within my 23.976 Project— which is viewable on the HDMI input of my Dell monitor (normally viewing MC UI over DVI input)

That might be enough for me to get a ballpark idea if I’m actually improving things. I find that doing a short sample MP4 is good, too.

I’m not pretending to be a colorist, knowing all the technology and experience that skilled specialists use, I am just glad that for $99, I can make use of Symphony’s “Source side” corrections that update instantly in my sequence using Group Clips on multicamera projects.

If you're going to use that Dell monitor, why not just grade in Full Screen Display mode, the FSD settings set to stretch to 0-255? What's the benefit of using the Io Express if you're not using it to feed a Rec709 video monitor?

Good idea, I like the simplicity of that feature. I can tell you though that even when I look at a 22.976 Sequence played out of a 59.94 Project via HDMI, it seems better somehow than the UI display in Full Screen or large single monitor setting. I don’t have a particularly good video card on my home system, either. I always assumed that it displayed less resolution and subject to inscrutable NVIDIA Settings rather than the real signal coming through the AJA device.

I know you’ve gone to great lengths to publish & explain Avid color space concepts, including Rec 709, and THANKS for that. but try as I might, I have never reached a breakthrough in understanding it all... probably just a blind spot on my part, though I do *think* I can spot a crushed black level or a raised one on import/transcode and I take time to look for it and re-do & fix.
