    Firewire 400/800 usb3 adapter

    Hi.

Does anyone in here still use FireWire disks and/or devices with newer HP-computers?

We've been using FW-disks for years for editing DVCPRO HD/DNxHD120 with MC on our PCs. But after upgrading to an Avid qualified HPZ440, and an extra FW card installed in slot 5, I've found that Avid no longer support FW on this HW.

I get system chrashes when trying to play material from FW-disks in MC 8.7.2 on the HP Z440. I can open the project, click trough and scroll the clips, but it'll freeze when I try to play the timeline. Total chrash, need to force power off to restart.

We mainly edit on USB3 drives, but obviously it would be great to still be able to connect our FW-disks and tapedecks to our editing suite. I've been searching google and the forum, and it doesn't seem to be any solution. But surely others might have this challenge as well..?

    Best Regards;

I'm sorry I don't have a solution for your problem, but I do have a feeling it's not the software that isn't supporting FW. I think it's probably a driver, or chipset issue with your current system. In the day, Avid was pretty specific about what FW chipset would work with their Adrenaline and Mojo devices. Perhaps a different FW card, or updated drivers?

You may also need to try the FW card in a different slot. I'd do that before replacing the card. And do check for updated drivers (or perhaps even a driver 1 or 2 versions back).

I also remember there was an issue with Windows 7 Firewire drivers, and Avid recommended using legacy drivers.

    Thanks for the reply!

Yes, I've allready changed to the legacy driver but the problem still occures. In fact, when we first set up this HW a year ago and experienced these crashes, changing to legacy driver worked fine. But now I've had crashes again still with the legacy driver installed.

I'll try change the slot. Any suggestions to wich?

I understand that FW is old and obsolete, but I'm convinced some other editors out there still need to use FW-decks and disks together with newer PC/HPs occasionally:) But how..? You know; I have no problem controlling and ingesting U-matic SP or Betacam still, surely there must be a way..:)

I don't know what FW card you're using, but unless it's a PCI-E x1 then you're pretty much limited to slot 5 (the preferred one, which is where the card is currently located) or port 4 (assuming you don't have ISIS / NEXIS or other controller there). And if it is x1 then you can also try slot 1.

I've got a FW card in my editing system to support my existing HDV cameras. It's a generic Texas Instrument OHCI compliant chip (FW 400 only) using the default Microsoft driver rev 10.0.14393.0 from 6/21/2006. This is on a Windows 10 box, but the same driver works on Windows 7.

    Thanks,

Our FW card is Sonnet Allegro FW800 PCIe x1. Does that mean so could try slot 1?

The Avid Z440 Configuration Guideline says slot 1 is "Not recommended for use in Avid Configurations" though...

If you look at the HP guide, a 1394b card (your Sonnet) should go into slot 1 or slot 3.

What HP guide are you refering to? If you could post a link I'd be greatful :)

We've been using this Config Guide, page 7:

    http://resources.avid.com/supportfiles/config_guides/AVID%20HP%20Z440%20Config%20Guide%20-%20Rev%20B.pdf

Our retailer told us to try slot 5 for the FW-card, as slot 1 shared some functions internally with other stuff on the motherboard that otherwise needed to be turned off in BIOS. Not sure what that is...

    Re: Firewire 400/800 usb3 adapter

    Thanks!

Slot 3 is used for the Nitrix DX so I'll try slot 1 then. But first I guess I need to find out why Avid don't recommend using that slot...
