    UNC drive mapping

    Hi all,

This is a question instead of a problem. Is there a point to using letterless UNC drive mapping in the client manager if MC can't use the path to mount the drive? In other words, is there any way to get around the Windows drive letter issue?

One of our facilities has been mainly Mac but we're looking to PCs for the next hardware upgrade. The way the ISIS was set up (before I started) is that each project has its own workspace so a couple times a year the editors are mounting around 25 volumes to create sizzle reels and that sort of thing.

I'd like to get them away from 1 project per workspace but until I can do that is there any way to, say, mount 30 drives on a Windows client?

    Thanks.

Media Composer can read from UNC Paths, but not write to them.  You may be able to set the 30+ source Worksaces as UNC, and have a separate Workspace (with a drive letter) for them to write to.

This may be a silly question but how do you get MC to read from UNC mounted workspaces? I can only see media if I map to a drive letter. Thanks

If there's an Avid MediaFiles folder already on a workspace, Media Composer will read from it but it won't write to it.

For this to work; at some point a MC seat must have written the database files - so it had to be mounted as a letter.

I already tried that - everything still offline - as soon as I mount with drie letter it all comes back. I only want to do this becasue Avid and Telestream both recommend it for Vantage servers.

    Re: UNC drive mapping

On Windows when a user logs into the client, all the workspaces the users has permissions to are mounted via a UNC Path. You should see the NEXIS and workspaces under Network; so regardless - they are mounted via a UNC path even when mounted via a letter.

I'm not the Media Composer guy so maybe something changed.
