Sony PXW-FS5 XAVC clips stuck in never ending transcode in Media Composer 8.4.5

I recently recorded some test footage on a Sony PXW-FS5, which Sony was gracious enough to lend me for testing.  I am able to link to and play the footage in Media Composer 8.4.5 (PDZK-MA2_v3.4.2), but I cannot transcode any of the footage. Everytime I attempt to transcode, the transcode progress bar and estimated completion time will progress normally, but at 100% complete the progress bar stops and the estimated completion time and time elapsed (now matching) will keep counting up indefinitely.  Has anyone else encountered this?

Re: Sony PXW-FS5 XAVC clips stuck in never ending transcode in Media Composer 8.4.5

I wondered if the issue might be the Long GOP XAVC, so I recorded some additional test footage on a Sony PXW-FS7.  I recorded both XAVC-L and XAVC-I.  The XAVC-I footage worked perfectly.  The XAVC-L had the same transcode issue I encountered with the Sony PXW-FS5 footage.  The FS5 can only record XAVC-L.  Has anyone else encountered transcode issues with XAVC-Long GOP?

    Hi Tim,

I encode XAVCL from my FS7. It works fine, but after I finished editing I have to relink the sequence to the ama files, because, no matter wich DNXHD coded I choose, the quality is bad, full of artifacts. Make sure you have the latest AMA plugins!

I use MC 7.05. so can´t talk about MC8.4.5 You could also use Sony CatalystBrowse to encode the files to ProRes before going into avid. I know it´s bad.

    Good luck.

    Andre.

Thanks Andre.  Per your suggestion, I tried MC 7.0.5 with the latest AMA plugin (v3.42) and I encountered the same problem.  I'm baffled at this point.  MC 8.4.5 is running on a MacBook Pro 2.5 GHz Core i7 and MC 7.0.5 is running on a Mac Pro 2.66 GHz 6 core Intel Xeon.  Both systems are OS X 10.9.5 and I do not have perian installed.  Why are two very different systems having the same problem?

I also have the latest Sony AMA Plugin. Did you tried transcoding a sequence without the DATA track, that is automatically created by the Sony XAVC material? I remember this was a problem solver for me.

    Good luck.

Weird!  I can transcode a sequence of XAVC-L media, but I cannot transcode master clips!  Is this a bug in the AMA plugin?  Thanks for the suggestion Andre.  I had not thought to try transcoding a sequence.  It's very weird though that I can successfully transcode a sequence of XAVC-L media, but cannot transcode the same master clips.

    Hi Graham,

Glad to hear I'm not the only one experiencing this problem with the Sony FS5 footage.  Can you do the same weird workaround of transcoding a sequence of clips, but can't transcode master clips?

Yeah, I tried transcoding sequences and I believe that worked but can't remember now. I just wound up transcoding everything in Resolve before importing into Avid. Hopefully that will work...

Re: Sony PXW-FS5 XAVC clips stuck in never ending transcode in Media Composer 8.4.5

I have successfully transcoded XAVC-L master clips but that was from a PXW-X70 and not an FS5 so same codec but lower data rate. No problems here with quality but the footage was fairly static.

The data track definitely causes some clips from the FS7 to randomly fail but the symptoms are different - no endless loop - just a transcoding fail. see this thread for more details

Can we go back to the way audio nodes used to be selected? Please? ie if you have audio nodes at the same time on selected tracks; then selecting 1 audio node selects them all at that time. Having to shift select nodes or add an in and out is time consuming and counter productive. At least make it an option.

I was having the same problem with any FS5 XAVC-L clips longer than 10 seconds. Per a suggestion from Sony Tech Support, I downgraded my XAVC/XDCAM AMA plugin to version 3.32 and it seems to have fixed this problem.

Just had the same issue and the XAVC/XDCAM AMA plugin version 3.32 fixed the issue. Thank you for posting this helpful information.
