    Canon XC10 Codecs

Just trying to work with footage from the new Canon XC10. 4K works fine with the canon XF codec, but no joy with any flavour of HD. Anyone managed to get it working?

FCP X sees it just fine, just can't bear to work with it though.

I'm on Avid 8, Yosemete AMA driver xpfm-3.

Have you downloaded the latest Canon AMA plugin?

The XC10's software page, including the AMA plugin, can be found here.

    Does that work?

The 4K format it shoots to is an AVC format...it might be one that Avid doesn't work with.  XAVC-I Avid works with, but XAVC-S it doesn't. I looked and didn't see what specific AVC format it shoots to.  You might need a third party converter to first convert that format to something Avid works with.  EDITREADY can convert XAVC-S to DNxHR, then avid can AMA Link and consoildate that.  Free demo too.

    Re: Canon XC10 Codecs

That is the driver I installed. The 4k is fine, HD it says it cant link to the media.

I tried the ususl, linking to the folder above contents and even tried contents and MXF to see if that was the problem. It seems odd that HD is not supported. The FCP drivers worked just fine.

    Re: Canon XC10 Codecs

The 4K was OK, its the HD that it just doesn't see. FCP no probs.

Conversion processes are a nightmare when there is loads of media. I know its an option, but I am trying to avoid it if I possibly can.

    Thanks

Well, if that HD is XAVC-S...Avid doesn't support that yet. FCP might, but not all NLE's support everything.

That might be a question to log at Canon.  If their product page shows that same AMA plugin for that camera, with no corresponding notes as to any limitations, you might want to verify that it supposed to work as advertised.

    Re: Canon XC10 Codecs

Hi Kevin, I did contact Canon who initially said they thought the HD XAVC-S should work fine. They got straight back however when they checked further they discovered..

"Avid systems only seem to be able to handle the XF-AVC intra-frame compression that is used for 4K footage, not the XF-AVC long GOP used for HD footage. It seems only Avid systems has this issue."

Hopefully Avid and Canon (or Sony?) coild have a word with each other to get this codec included? It does appear to be only Avid having issues.

    Cheers
