DNxHD with alpha *into* After Effects

    Hi,

I've seen several posts on exporting DNxHD with alpha from AE, but I need to export a DNxHD with alpha from Media Composer for use in AE.  I've tried just about every permutation of settings, and also tried an Animation with alpha, but no luck.  Within AE, I've tried to interpret footage as Straight Matte, Premultiplied, and "Guess" but alpha still doesn't come through.  Have any of you run into this problem?

I'm on Windows, and my software versions are After Effects CS6 and Media Composer 6.5.4.

    TIA,

    Jonas Cox

Media Composer does not export anything with an alpha.

Thanks, but why, then, all the alpha-related settings (millions+, or "None", "Compressed" and "Uncompressed")?

The DNx .mov codec supports alphas.  It is just MC that does not support export with alpha.

Only a Product Manager for Avid could tell us why that decision was made.

Since MC won't export with Alpha, the only other way is to export the video without alpha, and then display the alpha channel on the timeline and export that. You can use the alpha video in AE to add the alpha channel back to the original video.

Thanks for that workaround.  I'll try that in the future, but for now I'm doing all the compositing in AE.  The reason I had wanted to export alpha from MC is that I like to pull keys with Spectramatte, because I don't have any keying plug-ins in AE.  Instead, I used the basic color key in AE and then rotoscoped/masked out parts that didn't key.

For the work flow I describe, you'd create the alpha using Spectramatte and then export out both the original video and the grayscale matte video from MC. Import both videos into AE, put them into a new composition as layers, and set the grayscale matte layer as a Luma matte. There's your keyed video from Spectramatte.

What version of AE are you using?  Keylight has been part of the AE package for a long time.  It is a great keyer.

I see Keylight in there.  I guess that was the one option I hadn't trialed-and-errored.  Thanks!

Keylight is a good keyer, but it has a steep learning curve. It took me a while to get it under control when I first started using it, but it's definitely worth persisting with.

    Very true.  Still learning it.

One big thing is that (for my tastes) it's splll suppression makes the fill noisey at times.  So I often just get a good matte then use a different spill suppression tool.

Re: DNxHD with alpha *into* After Effects

I've tried using Spectramatte but always felt Keylight to be a better option. So a long time ago I decided to do all of my keying and graphics in AE and use Avid strictly for editing.  Besides Keylight 1.2 AE CC now has key cleaner,  inner/outer key, linear color key and advance spill supressor.  A lot of good plugins to get you through a badly lit 8 bit green screen shot.

I also have the free version of Fusion, and anything I can't readily do with Keylight I do with Primatte.  I've become a real fan of that.

I was just looking at the Beta Version of Fusion 8 and Primate is SEVERLY limited in that version.  Is that different from the official free version?

Re: DNxHD with alpha *into* After Effects

Can't really answer that - I'm still running F7 because F8 was crippled in another way.  On F7 the F4 key gives you full screen playback.  On F8 you can't get full screen monitoring unless you have Blackmagic hardware.  So I guess that it's quite possible that they've crippled Primatte too.
