Nvidia Quadro K4200/K5200 VS GTX 980TI

Hi all,  I have the Quadro 4000 and I am thinking of upgrading to one of the above.

What would you recommend for Media Composer+Synphony and DaVinci Resolve on the same platform?
    Thanks!

If you do jump to the K4200 would you still be able to keep the 4000 as a second GPU (for Resolve if you have the full license)?

Looks like the K4200 is much more powerful than the 4000 but not sure if you will benefit in MC - probably will in Resolve, though and maybe with some GPU accelerated plugins in MC.

    *edit*

You changed the subject line so my response doesn't make as much sense. You had initially suggested that you were considering moving from a 4000 to a K4200 - hence my response. The GTX980TI is more powerful but I'm not sure it plays as well with MC - others can weigh-in on that.

    Hi BarkinMadd,

The question is, what will be the best for Avid M.C+Symphony and DaVinci Resolve(not full) on the same platform? step up from Quadro 4000 to K4200 or K5200(expensive) or going to the unauthorized GTX 980TI?

I am not sure what will I do with the old Quadro 4000. Can I install 2 not identical graphics cards?

    Thanks for your replay.

Re: Nvidia Quadro K4200/K5200 VS GTX 980TI

It's funny that you asked because I was just considering moving from my 4000 to a K4200 because of the higher memory and overall faster GPU. I wonder if there is someone here who has made this sort of upgrade and found GPU effects (and Resolve) to render faster?

There is also a replacement for the K4200 called the M4000 which is not yet available from B&H - a bit faster and with 8GB DDR5 RAM instead of the 4GB shipping with the K4200. The M4000 has 4 DiplayPorts (presumably you can get a display port - to - DVI if you're like me).

Anyway - I know that a few of the regulars on this forum have upgraded from the 4000 to higher but they may have tied that upgrade to an overall PC upgrade so it may be hard to say whether the GPU upgrade itself made much of a difference for MC - probably more for Resolve.

Hopefully we'll hear from the others ;-)

Re: Nvidia Quadro K4200/K5200 VS GTX 980TI

i'm also interested. years ago i changed my quadro2000 to a "better" quadro4000. my conclusion: not faster in avid but much louder than the qudaro2000. so i have to kick out the workstation from the editing room, buying much longer dvi cables, get pixelated desktop, sometimes blank screen beacause of the cable length, spend much money for better cables. finally for me a really bad decision. If someone could verify that a k2200 or k4200 is really faster than the older ones, please let me/us know.

Re: Nvidia Quadro K4200/K5200 VS GTX 980TI

One thing I've noted from product reviews of the K4200 (aside from it being about 4x faster than the 4000) is that it runs much cooler than the 4000 (and I believe quieter). If you've ever noticed, the 4000 runs very hot (> 80 C) which some say is the cause of premature failures (perhaps a design flaw but I tend not to believe everything I read on the internet ;-)

I've got one on order so I'll be able to report whether or not I see much difference on my less than stellar system.

Re: Nvidia Quadro K4200/K5200 VS GTX 980TI

I bought a quadro 4000 ~5 years ago when I bought my HP Z400. It ran hot. Consequently, the fan ran fast & loud. It drove me to distraction. I replaced it with a K4200 about a year ago. MC doesn’t use much GPU acceleration but the noise—or lack thereof—is much appreciated.

Quadro 4000 & K4200 are both PCI2 cards. K4200 is the biggest Quadro GPU on a PCI2 card. K5200 & up plus Maxwell series are all PCI3 cards. Will PCI3 run at reduced throughput on PCI2 motherboards such as Z400 or do they not run at all?

    BHPhoto’s prices this morning are K4200: ~$785, K5200: ~$1780 and M4000: ~$890.

Re: Nvidia Quadro K4200/K5200 VS GTX 980TI

i can chime in with a comparison quadro 3800 vs 4200.

    yes: it's o lot faster.

that being said, I'd rather hold out for a quadro 2300/4300.

    very overdue, 21nm process. Q1 2016 i thinks.

nvida will have to decide whether they can justify a 800$ quadro card sucking only 60 watts or givie us much more power to play with ;)

also: all resolutions of 4k screens supported.
