Adding a Thunderbolt slot to HP z820

Hello all and thanks in advance for any solutions.

I have my Nitris DX installed on my HP z820 in slot 5. The HBA card only fits that slot. Recently I had a request to access media on a Thunderbolt drive. I went in hunt of a thunderbolt card and found that HP would supply one BUT it requires to be installed in slot 5 too? How can I have the nitris dx and the thunderbolt connected at the same time and what are the compromises if the slot was left with two devices hanging off it.

    Thanks again

Yes, DX and the TB card each need the same slot. Terry Curren has posted that before, here or on the Avid-L2. You cannot have two cards in one slot, of course.

So does that mean there is 'no daisy chain' or 'adapters' that would allow the two pieces of hardware connected at the same time ?

ASUS ThunderboltEX II/DUAL PCI Express Dual Port Thunderbolt 2 PCI Controller

    And a sonnet thunderbolt adapter

    Thanks again

That would all be untested configurations, and to be honest, I would not advise you to spend too much time trying to get that to work. Might be easier to get a simple PC or Mac with TB connectors and attach that to your network.

If you are only accessing media via thunderbolt to transfer files to the local hd, you could probably live in another slot.

Dell Display U2713HM(2560x1440), AMD FX8350 8core, AMD 990FX mobo, 32gig-DDR3-1600, Quadro K620/GTX260/core 216, Audigy2zs, 1TB SSD system drive, 2TB SATA... [view my complete system specs]

    Using MC 8.4. Avid FX6.4, Vegas Pro 15/ DVD Architect 6pro, DVDit6.4proHD, CCE Basic, TmpGe Express4, TmpGe Authoring Works 4, DVDLab-Studio. Sony EX-1R, Canon XH-A1, GL2, GL1, Canon EOS 60D

    Ok thanks

it is probably best to leave it as is and transcode the media on another machine

    thanks again

Z820 v2, thunderbolt card in slot 5, Areca 8040 thunderbolt RAID (configured RAID 5) daisy chained DX thunderbolt adapter from the Areca into a Mojo DX. Media Composer 8.4 running beautifully. Great stand-alone set up with incredible speed and latency.
