Exception: Failed to get the sample position from the AMA Plug-in

I am using very long .mov's in my MC sequence.  upwards of 2-3 hours-

The parts i am including in my edits are only seconds, so i am not spending the time or drive effort to import those QT in their entirety into my sequence.  rather, my workflow is to link to ama file, mark my in's and outs to the parts i want, then i transcode and off i go.

For the most part, workflow works well...

for whatever reason however in the last couple days on numerous different machines i am getting the following message:

Exception: Failed to get the sample position from the AMA Plug-in,

and it wont let me play my long clips imported via AMA.

    suggestions?

after doing a bit of research i found on avid's site:

    http://www.avid.com/US/products/Avid-Media-Access

AMA Media Access different plugs for AMA.

I see the one that says Quicktime Plug-in, and i think it is EXACTLY what i need to update as my files are indeed .mov in ProRes.

the thing is, the rest of them have a download option, this one does not.

    ?????

With AMA-supported file formats, such as RED, Apple ProRes, AVCHD, P2 and XDCAM, you may link to files without having to perform a separate import or ingest step. ProRes media cannot be included in an AAF as either embedded or consolidated media.

    thanks-

so i am bit confused- the first part it states taht i can with AMA-supporte formats see apple PRoRes, but then later it says i can not see PRo-Res media in AAF.

So I can or can not link to prores via ama?

You can't put ProRes media in a embedded or consolidated AAF on the way out. That does not apply to playing AMA files or accessing AMA sources on the way in.

The QuickTime plugin is included in the Media Composer installation.  Sometimes the Auto Detect function gets, um, challenged.  If things aren't working as expected upon import, manually select the correct AMA plugin rather than using Auto Detect.

If the sample position fails after multiple tries, try relaunching and/or rebooting.  If it still fails, try re-populating the AMA bin in question by not using Auto Detect.

If all else fails, do a search on the Forums using the excepton message to see what others have discovered.

Must think of something clever to go here...

what Howard sid so elloquently. :)

Yes, AMA supports both 422 and 444 ProRes.  AMA does not support CC (Closed Captioning) information within those movies, however.
