    HDV and Fields

    Hello,

I have confusion about HDV. Working on MC 8, Mac 10.9 and Thunderbolt drive.

I have files that are 1920 x1080p. I also have files from Sony Z5.

    This is what I did.

    1. I linked with AMA and transcoded the 1080p to 1080i.

    2. I fast import the Sony Z5.

Both formats are upper field first, so I check this on Avid import. Is this the correct thing?

    Export will have to be:

    • Container :MOV

    • Codec : h264

    • Aspect ratio : 16x9

    •  Resolution :1920x1080

    •  Frame rate : 25fps

    • Scan type :interlace

    • Field order : lower field first.

My questiion is about lower field export, with upper field footage. I know not about this. Is this a problem? If someone have suggestion, it would be helpful.

Also, is my work flow for import OK?

    Re: HDV and Fields

Actually, a number of things don't make sense.

    1. Why are you exporting lower field first when your sources are upper field first and/or progressive?

    2. Why transcode the progressive source to interlaced when you can edit with it fine as progressive?

    3. h.264 is usually for web or online use, so why are you exporting it interlaced at all?  What is your final destination/delivery?

The only time lower field first in normal is when you are dealing with DV.

    Re: HDV and Fields

    I agree, it seem strange.

    To answer your question:

    1. It is a requirement to export lower field first. Someone says it will be converted to SD later. This was in PDF sent to me.

Should I transcode or import to lower field first?

    2. Company says that it must be interlaced. I agree this is confusing.

    3. It will be broadcast in SD. Company want to convert later. They want to keep HD version for the future.

Does importing lower or upper field media have anything to relate to exporting upper or lower field first?
