    Canon XF codec with MC

I am considering buying the Canon XF105. Will I be able to import the Canon XF codec with my aged MC 5.5? Canon claims theri XF Codec is a genuine snuggle bunny with Avid, see below:

"The XF105 utilizes Canon's XF Codec – a file-based MPEG-2 compression with an MXF File Wrapper that ensures the widest compatibility with existing industry infrastructure, metadata and non-linear editing (NLE) systems."

They go on to specifically mention Avid compatability. But a search of XF Codec and MC shows a lot of problems, workarounds, and hair pulling.

I dont care about Canon, Sony, Panasonic But I whatever camcorder I get I don't want any headaches getting my stuff into MC 5.5. I want a nice easy process. I am still in the "recovery room" from my recent bad Mojo experience Sad

Any XF105 users, good/bad?  Other camcorder suggestions?

Re: Canon XF codec with MC

I use the Cannon XF305 and Sony XDCAM-EX3 regulalry -  I've used the Cannon 105.  Good cameras.

I find the SONY clip tool far less persicity than the CANNON.  It recognises it's own ofter a simple copy / paste, where as Canon clip tool can be a *** of you don't transfere in a specific way. I thnk the Sony tool is more flexible in terms of outputing various file formats. Call me slow, but the Canon tool is not dummy-level intuitive

In either case, using the clip tool to preselect portions of a clip for exporting / importing to AVID will reduce the drive space considerably.

I've never had much luck with AMA - was never able to get the Cannon AMA plug in to work in my system  (4.08). Going to make a greater effort with AMA when I updagrade soon.

PS: The nice thing about the cannon is the media card...it costs a lost less than sony, and fits into an internal media slot in the computer. The wide flip out screen is a winner. Aquire a few raw clips from a cannon and try the workflow beofre you by

    Hi,

XF105 I bought two years ago and I am very happy. Smile

I do not know how MC5.5, but from at least MC6 native codec support through AMA - Consolidation to the working HDD field, very fast without TRANSCODING. Canon XF browser is not as sophisticated as Sony XDCAM Browser, but for sorting and copying from card to HDD is sufficient (the ability to copy from multiple cards into one folder). I think that's the best camera in this category, price / performance ratio - excellent.

    Hi,

We bought a number of XF105s last year and they have been working well AMA linking in MC 5.5 and transcoding. XF Utility is fairly basic but works fine getting media off cards onto computer drives.

All that said I am using Macs so sorry if people's experience on PCs differs.

Well I sprung for the XF105. Seems nice. Quite small. BUT none of the termimals are inputs, all outputs. I was hoping I could injest VHS directly into the 105. Poop. SadSadSad

For VHS - what are your system specs?  Depending on what kind of expansion you have available on your computer, you can get a basic I/O device to capture VHS into MC.

Well I just bought a Mojo SDI for that very purpose and it was a total wast of money because it never worked. See drama here: http://community.avid.com/forums/p/130827/748409.aspx#748409

I am still on MC 5.5
