Re: New Mac Pro whith Media Composer

    Hi Brian,

I do not own any TB chassis. I was just inquiring about it. As of today, it looks like there are no Avid Nitris DX/ New Mac Pro approved TB chassis or adapters. Waiting for Avid to clarify exactly why.

    Gotcha.

Hopefully we'll here something soon.  I'm sure there are a lot of Nirtis owners who are wondering how to upgrade....

    Thanks for the reply!

    zachnfine:

I've got MC 7.0.3 up and running on my new Mac Pro 8-core with 2x D700 GPUs. I did have to connect a usb audio interface so that Media Composer would find an audio input on startup and not just refuse to finish launching with an audio initialization error. After that, it's been working fine so far, though I haven't pushed it too hard yet.

I discovered that you do not even need an USB audio interface to have an audio input.

By plugging in a headphone with microphone an audio input is created and the MC will startup.

    DA-

Long long time no talk...we did a few jobs with Jon Parks back in the day.  I have a new trash can and it is hooked up to my sonnett echo express with a decklink studio card in it and works like a champ.  My RAID array is hooked up thru USB 3 and is doing 250MB/s read and write.  If you have external audio devices, then there's a pretty good chance it will work fine.  I am running MC with symphony option 7.03 and osx 10.9.1.  Good luck.

Hey Brennan! Wow, great to hear from you. Yes, fun times back in the day. Thanks for sharing those tips. I wonder if the Nitris DX will work with the sonnett echo...I am sure we will find out soon. I will try and get my system up and running later this week. I bought the 6 core with the D700 cards. I also purchased a Pegasus2 R6 12TB RAID that will be connected via Thunderbolt 2. I can't wait to get it all working.

    Take care,

    Derrick

How does Avid run on the 6 core model with D700? Is it snappy and fast? I'm at the point of ordering one.

Re: New Mac Pro whith Media Composer

I upgraded from Symphony 5.5 with a Nitris DX running on an old 8 core Mac Pro and Avid was pretty rock solid already on that system.

The new Mac Pro is snappy and fast with Davinci Resolve and After Effects but not as much with MC. Probably due to the fact that I can no longer use the Nitris DX and am now using 3rd party I/O. It lost a bit of responsivness. The transcodes and renders are much faster on the new Mac.

I would recommend getting the new Mac Pro, it's pretty fast. Davinci Resolve was playing raw 4K Sony F55 footage with several nodes of correction in real time.

    Hi Derrick,

Can you share what 3rd party I/O you're using? Happy (of course you're not happy w/out an idle Nitris)?

I'm using the Blackmagic mini monitor right now. Sending video out via HDSDI and audio through HDMI out to a receiver to decode audio. I don't see any frame delay in audio/video sync, there is just a slight pause when hitting play in the timeline before the video will roll. On the DX it was instant

I'm waiting to hear if the Nitris DX is EOL'd for new Macs. If so, I will buy the Blackmagic Ultrastudio 4K.

Yes, very happy with the new Mac Pro. Go ahead, order it!

Believe IT just placed the order today. Glad to hear the Ultra minis are working as intended. Expecting that there won't be good news for extending Nitris DX life w/ the new mac pros we're planning on x8 UltraStudio 4Ks and the rest Ultra minis.

Re: New Mac Pro whith Media Composer

Okey, because of budget limitations I have to choose between the following:

Option 1: A 6-core system with 32 gig ram, 512 gig SSD and D700 cards

    or

Option 2: A 8-core system with 16 gig ram, 256 gig SSD and D500 cards

    Any recommendation welcome.

Besides Avid MC I use Adobe's Creative Suite CS6. AE etc.

These days transcoding is faster without the nitris dx on any computer less then 5 years old. If you care to read more about this:
