New App To Auto-Label VFX in Sequence

    Hello Fellow Avid Peeps:

I've just posted v1 of a new Mac app to my website for anybody who's doing tons of VFX labeling in your shows.

Basically, if you add locators (or comments) to all your VFX in a form similar to: VFX101_001_001 (ie: show 101, scene 1, shot 1)...or something similar, you can simply export an EDL with your locators or comments visible and then search for a unique VFX identifier and the app will generate a text file which you can then import into Avid's SubCap tool to instantly label all of your VFX. In the example above, I would add VFX as the search term to delineate my VFX.

As I make feature additions and bug fixes, I'll post new versions to my site.

This came about because I'm having to label somewhere between 200 and 1,000 shots per episode on Once Upon a Time and it was taking hours. It now takes seconds.

I know it's sort of specific, but if it's useful, please enjoy it and let me know if you find errors. While I'm not a professional programmer, I want it to be as robust as possible. I've also included a sample EDL to get a sense of it. If using my example EDL use ONC for the search term, as my FX are named ONC311_???_???.

Save the resulting file with a .TXT extension and import it into SubCap on a top video layer in Media Composer. Voila, instant VFX titles.

    Enjoy: http://www.chrisconlee.com/avid.htm

My pleasure. I hope it helps.

For what it's worth, it's already been brought to my attention that the search field is case sensitive. Top of my list of 'fixes' is to make that case insensitive. Also, be sure you save your resulting file with a .txt extension. I'll try to figure out how to make that the default too.

Seems to be interesting but app won't launch on OS 10.6.7...

Perhaps indicate some requirements somewhere ?

Hmmm, possibly a setting in Xcode somewhere. Thanks for bringing that to my attention.

Yikes! Amazing might be overstating it, since this is my first code in probably 20 years, but I hope it's at least useful. Geeked

Small bug-fix and the info window has a scroll-bar now. Let me know if it will launch in 10.6, as I don't have a machine to test on.

I'll also be uploading a follow-up utility within the next couple days to help with auto-placing markers on VFX shots in your sequences.

Re: New App To Auto-Label VFX in Sequence

Hello everybody. I've rewritten the app from the ground up to be more efficient and hopefully more stable. I've just posted the new build to my site. Someday I'll figure out how to properly version identify the various builds, etc. but in the meantime I'll just post these updates when a new build gets posted.

BTW, I think this requires 10.7 or greater to run. I've gotten several reports that it won't launch in 10.6, but I don't have access to a machine running less than 10.7 to confirm. If anybody else can, that would be great. Once I know for sure, I'll update my documentation page to indicate this.

    Thanks.
