Please wait while Windows configures Avid Media Composer

All of a sudden this is pops up when I start up MC 5.0.3 on Vista:  "Please wait while Windows Configures Avid Media Composer".  I click cancel and MC continues to bootup.  However, my one project--of course the one that I need to work on--crashes MC when I try to open it.  I haven't touched this project in 3-4 weeks.  I tried replacing it with a backup copy that I had made at the time, as well as a backup made earlier in the summer.  Both crash.  Stranger still, when I try to open that project's bins in another project, MC crashes.  I even tried copying the bin file itself to another project and renamed; the project opened but when I tried to open the bin it crashed.  The other projects on my system seem to be OK.

Avid's article on the "Please wait while windows configures..." issue says to make sure the Donglecheck file is in the correct folder.  It is, and I even replaced it with the one you can download from the article.

    Any ideas?

Have you tried "Larry usual suspects"?

In your case, I started a project setting.

I deleted the project setting and created a new user profile, no luck.  I don't think windows has those site setting files to delete - I couldn't find them.

However, I just tried opening a few different bins from that project, and one of them opens.  So I'm not sure what's going on here.  I even went back to the oldest attic backup of the bad bin from june and it crashes the system too.

The windows configuration popup is just annoying but it has to be connected to the bin crash somehow.

"... I don't think Windows has those site setting files to delete - I couldn't find them ..."

    (OS)C: > Users > Public > Public Documents > Avid Media Composer > Settings

    Delete the following:

    MCState
    Site Settings.avs
    Site Settings.xml
    Site_Attributes

Then, delete the Project Settings.avs file again, and make another User Profile.  This resets all of the settings at the same time.

So I solved both issues by simply updating MC to 5.0.4.4.  I still have no idea what caused the problems in the first place but as long as things are working...

Did you delete the installed Nvidia driver .exe to save space - this can cause this.

I don't think so -- I literally haven't touch anything on this system in weeks and it was running fine the day before.
