    Yamaha 01V96i

After searching this site and the web I'm still unsure how to hook up my Yamaha 01V96i to Media Composer to use as a control surface, which the manual and Help section insist I can.

Right now I have the mixer's USB plugged into my MacPro, which can see it in Audio MIDI Setup.  It's also midi connected to a MOTU MTP/AV that is USB into the Mac.

Do I still need to get the MidiSport 2x2 that's mentioned in Help?

I had no idea this was possible.  You want to use the 01v to control Avid's audio mixer?  My advice is to call Yamaha's support and they will help you out.  They have helped me a bunch with our 01vs.

not 100% here, but the O1v96i should support H. U. I. protocol via it's USB port. If it does, you should be able to assign it to MC in the "controllers" dialog. You can access this setting like so: open a project, go to the floating project window, go to the settings tab, and double click the "controllers" option. There should be several dropdown menus with options to select a controller, if one is detected.

Edit: the forum is filtering H U I as a single word.

Is that true? I was under the impression that Media Composer didn't support H U I.

    My software:

Pro Media Tools - Edit QuickTime chapters and metadata, detect gamma shifts, edit markers, watch renders and more

The Yamaha's used to be supported, not over H.U.I, but with a MidiSport box in the chain. I had that setup working with a 01V (non-96). Not sure if it is still supported. MC manual used to describe how to set it up in detail.
