RAM configuration for iMac 27" i7 quad core 3.4GHz

I have also posted this question on the thread from Videoguys, but in case someone else knows --

I am helping my boss purchase a new iMac 27" i7 quad core 3.4GHz and she is willing to buy 16GB RAM.

Do we need it configured as 2X8GB or 4X4GB RAM because of the quad core (separate RAM chip for each core)?

If we need to down the road, we may purchase more RAM.  Does that figure into this configuration?  Does it make a difference in terms of performance which way we configure the RAM?

Thanks in advance for your replies!

    Best,
    Ceci

Re: RAM configuration for iMac 27" i7 quad core 3.4GHz

Answering this myself in case anyone needs to know in the future :)

I called Videoguys and they recommend 2 X 8GB RAM.

In the future, should you want to improve performance, you can then add 2 X 8GB RAM to go into the last two RAM slots.  No matter what, RAM needs to be added in equal pairs.  If you bought 4 X 4GB RAM, you would need to toss 2 X 4GB RAM and then purchase 2 X 8GB RAM, which would be a waste of the 2 X 4GB RAM.  The gentleman I spoke with told me that it does not make a difference in performance whether you get 4 X 4GB RAM or 2 X 8GB RAM.

The iMac 27" i7 has 4 total slots for RAM.
