Does Media Composer Transcode from Original Source?

I Know that AMA has been talked about a lot on these forums but I'm still unsure about one thing.

When I transcode a sequence into another format (ex. AMA to DNxMF 45) the original H.264 (ama) is transcoded into DNxMF 45. Then if I transcoded the DNxMF 45 sequence to DNxMF 100 does it transcode from the orginal source, h.264 (ama) or does it transcode from DNxMF 45?

My workflow is Link to AMA, h.264 files. Transcode to DNxMF 45 to edit. Then relink DNxMF 45 sequence back to AMA. Then Transcode to DNxMF 100. Is the relink step uncesssary? Could I just go straight from the DNxMF 45 sequnce to the DNxMF 100 sequence?

Yes, it definitely is Andrew, because you cannot uprez DnX45 to DnX100 and expect it to be true DnX 100 bit rate quality. The same reason why a dub from VHS to a pro tape format still looks like VHS. Your current workflow is the way to go.

VHS? Larry, I don't think any of the young'uns know what VHS is! I have about 200 VHS movies on some shelves in my basement. Last week my daughters asked me what they were. Gettin' old . . .
