Re: Canon C100 import settings and workflow

    bobcat:

The Canon C100 only records 24p in native 23.98. The other framerates (30PF, 25PF) are PsF and recorded in an interlaced wrapper. You have to tell Avid manually that they are Progressive clips.

Yes, that was the reason to why I asked if this was only when using media from Canon cams

    rdmartin:

how do you tell avid this upon importing/transcoding....??

Add " field motion " to the selections in your bin, you will get a scrolldown to select what it is.

    Michael Walcott:

I have observed this with Panasonic and Sony footage.

If so this same workflow is what you want to use.

We've been getting some aerial drone footage that's shot on a small Sony HD camera that outputs .mts files.  The best solution I found was to use Premiere CS6 to get my selects and then transcode to DNxHD220 for Symphony.

The newest version of Clipwrap will rewrap the AVCHD files from the C100 and make the files visible to Avid nd other NLE's as progressive files.

Re: Canon C100 import settings and workflow

Assuming your footage has been shot at 25PF:

Create a 1080p/25 project, AMA Link, and then transcode to DNxHD 120 or higher.

    Hi.

Working on this now. For some reason the footage is reading on avid as 25i.  Also, when I go to transcode, DNxHD is not an option. ANy ideas how to get that option on? THanks.

Just switch your project to what was shot with the cam, my guess is Hd, if you have shot it yourself just check what the cam is set to.

If it it media brought from someone else, Media Inspector is a nice free tool to examine the files.

OK now. Was a wierd thing with that disk, but going fine onto another one. Now, wondering what the best transcode settings are.  DNxHD or XDCamEX which I read was better, but I dont see any difference. Any thoughts? THanks!

    rdmartin:
Why would you link to ama volume, which gives you down converted clips at h.264(1080i50) and than have to re-upconverted an already degraded media back up to 1080p25??

AMA is not misinterpretting the footage.  AVCHD IS H.264.  As you are shooting 25fps, it is being recorded as PSF which is progressive within an interlaced container.  So AMA IS reading the footage correctly when it says H.264 and 50i.  Just set your project to 1080/25p AMA link and transcode to whichever flavour of DNx you want.  If you're finishing for broadcast I'd recommend DNx185 or 185X.

The tech specs for the C100 can be found here.  Read the section on recording.

Re: Canon C100 import settings and workflow

Anybody have experience using ClipWrap for this with Avid? We just got a C100 and are going to be shooting a huge variety of projects on it. I can AMA the AVCHD "file" (folder) into Avid and playback is great. When I ClipWrap the files same as source, Avid locks up playing back AMA.

For the time being I am going to just AMA the originals, but if anyone has had a similar experience with ClipWrap I'd love to know if you had any solutions. The other folks on my team aren't very good with media management and the idea of having a lot of AVCHD folders floating around and tons of clips all named 000XXX.mts is making me very antsy! Stick out tongue

We're using ClipWrap for our workflow in Premiere so it would be great to have the same workflow for Avid. I checked the wrapped files in Premiere and they playback perfectly.

Re: Canon C100 import settings and workflow

I tried ClipWrap a couple of times in Avid, with the same result - massive lock-up.  That's too bad, because it's the best software I've found for managing AVCHD, developers are helpful and responsive, and it would potentially be my immediate go-to every time, but it just isn't working the way I hoped.

So, I just stick to AMA, and go through and rename clips in the bin as soon as I link them.  I also make sure I organize my raw folders - generally by date.
