The new AUDIO MIXER in MC 6, 7 and 8 - TOO BIG

    Dear Avid,

i collected opinions of several editors across germany on how they live with the new Audio Mixer in MC6.

Those who already worked with MC6 complained about the missing "alt + pan" click option to center clips tracks, some even liked the fact of having a peakmeter per channel.

But all of them really don´t like the size. It fills nearly 1/2 of a 24" monitor compared to the MC5 mixer which filled just 1/8. For me personally it´s the main reason not to switch from 5 to 6, as it is for many colleagues.

As i could read several times in different threads already, this seem to bother many others (even when it´s not such an outcry like it was when the smart tool came out).

I see that there might be editors who don´t need to work with the maximum amount of audio tracks. So this doesn´t matter to them. But i care as i do mostly feature films and commercials and surely many others who don´t work with keyframes will agree.

The fact that users don´t complain about the new Audio Mixer doesn´t mean that they love it.

The tool as it is now is just not handy. It´s not focused on the main functionality of an audio mixer anymore, to simply change audio levels quickly.

Please, make it smaller, scalable or whatever. Maybe create another setting where each user can decide which options are offered in Audio Mixer e.g. peakmeter on/off. The Color "Correction" setting works like that already.

Or just make a button "Use classic Audio Mixer".

    Thanks Avid.

    Best
    Sven

P.S. next wishes would be more than 16 mono voices, improved "toggle selection" functionality when using the yellow arrow and matchframe on imported graphics with alpha ;)

    +1 on a resizable mixer

+1 on the need for (many) more voices

    +1 on matchframing to precomputes

Not sure what you mean by toggling yellow arrow, though.

Re: The new AUDIO MIXER in MC 6 - TOO BIG

+1 - the mixer is too big and one of the main reason why I still work with 5.5.

    P.s.

    +1 on more audio tracks

+1 on matchframe on imported graphics with alpha

I could add multiple audiosuite effects on a single clip (not the whole track!), move several audio keyframes horizontally etc. but that would loose the focus on the main topic - the big audio mixer

    I second that.

+1 from me for a scalable audio mixer or a customisable one where you can choose which panels you want to see.

Is the reason some aren't finding the mixer size such an issue related to actual screen resolutions?

Our systems are dual monitor each running at 1920X1080 and on those the tools take up much less space on screen.

Obviously as your screen res goes down the tools grow in size.

    Pat Horridge:

my systems even run at 2*1920*1200, and i find it much too big as well, as i might have mentioned afore ;-) (and since i am german but not amongst the editors Sven asked but collected opinions myself as well: + maybe 10).

(On the other hand concerning these resolutions i would love to see bigger fonts in the effects palette first of all instead of these designed in the 1024*768 ages.)

and concerning audio: we urgently need the possibility to add effects to the audio sum, i. e. an audio bus system. I just finished the first 7 shows according to the new EBU R128 loudness measuring standard. There are useful plugins available from Nugen, Grimm and TC Electronics for example, but working with audio mixdowns to use them is just a pita.

    +1 on all.

I think even just getting rid of all the seprerat peak meters that are now implemented into the audio mixer would cut the width in half. This could be an option for the audio mixer settings for example.

I like the separate meters, but making them optional for people who don't need them is fine with me.

No, the reason is that it is freakin' huge. Most of all if you need access to more than four tracks but have no interest in the source peak meters, it takes up too much of your screen. But even just accessing four tracks at a time.
Our systems are dual monitor each running at 1920X1080 and on those the tools take up much less space on screen.
It still takes up a lot of real estate, and - very important - it cannot be resized or collapsed in any way.

Exactly, compared to that the "solo" / "mute" buttons in the timeline are freakin' tiny.

i agree with the need for customisation, specially for laptop users, but on my 28' monitor, 1920x1200, it's o.k, with a dedicated layout, up to 8 tracks. however, the audio channels are too wide!

Re: The new AUDIO MIXER in MC 6 - TOO BIG

i have rebuilt your workspace in mc 5 to show what we find another weakness of mc 6: the interface is maybe stylish, but not usefully structured.

In MC 5 even when I turn the settings as dark as possible I still have an interface which makes it easy to focus on what is needed right now. It gives me the information I need at a glimpse while in MC 6 we all have to search with the eyes for example even for the control whether digitizing is taking place or not.

Besides the fact that in MC5 even with an 8 channel audio tool i still have room left due to the audio mixer's slimness I find that the comparison between the 2 screenshots clearly shows how hard it is to distinguish between the interface's sections and the tools in MC 6 compared to MC 5's interface.

In one word: I (and my colleagues as well) find the MC 6 interface extremely tiring in everyday work.

    Screenshot 1920*1200

EDIT: So sorry. I just found out that "extremely tiring" are two words.

Re: The new AUDIO MIXER in MC 6 - TOO BIG

Wow. That´s another issue, but i fully agree.

What i read so far, are some ideas how to live with an 8 track mixer (which has the size of a 16 track mixer of mc5), but i really need to work with at least 16 tracks.

Track 1-8 -> original sound recorded by the aaton cantar-x2 e.g. (records up to 8 tracks)
    Track 9-12 -> 2x stereo ambience /  sound effects
    Track 13-16 -> 2x stereo music

Thats the minimum of what is needed in the timeline. And these 16 tracks need to be controlled at once.
