Confused [*-)] Avid Media Composer 6 running on Apple's Boot Camp

    Hello,

We about to upgrade some of the classroom workstations to Mac Pro 8 core systems with the following specs:

Two 2.4 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon

    8GB RAM

    1TB 7200-rpm Serial ATA 3Gb/

ATI Radeon HD 5770 1GB Graphics Card

I want to run Dual boot systems with Windows 7 & Mac OS X 10.7 Lion using Boot Camp. Running each OS on a separate drive but I have been told that running Avid on Windows with Boot Camp on a Mac Pro system will cause problems with AVID MC6.

Is it possible to run AVID on a dual boot system with this configuration and does anyone know if this is a stable environment? Is there anyone having any issues?

We have multiple rooms doing in essence what you ask - Mac with Bootcamped Win7 and MC.  Most of the editors feel that the Windows side is more stable than the Mac side.

I'm curious - why do you want to run it on the Windows side? If that's the case, what are you using the OS X side for? Would it not make more sense just to run Avid on a PC if that's essentially what you're aiming to do anyway?

We do it because we also need (not want) to support FCP.  This allows for maximum flexibility with minimum cost.  Plus with multiple rooms connected to shared media storage, it greatly simplifies scheduling.

Understood. And why not run Avid in OS X in that case?

Re: Avid Media Composer 6 running on Apple's Boot Camp

Well, in our case we have one app that is PC only - Avid DS.  And while running DS on something other than a Z800 is totally unsupported, it works well for us. Plus, we have found that Win7 seems a bit more reliable than OSX for MC 6 at this point.

So a simple Win7 bootcamp setup gives a more reliable MC, runs DS and has the ability to hop to FCP when needed.  We also have the ability to start playing with Premiere as needed. (realizing that Premiere works on either.)

The cost of only 1 workstation makes this a big win for us.
