HDV and QT Reference File Issues (maybe)

I've been having issues with exporting HDV as QT Reference Files (for use with Squeeze) that I originally thought was a Squeeze issue, but am now wondering if it might be an MC issue.

I'd like to get someone who deals with HDV to give the following scenerio a try:

    1. Import or capture an HDV clip.

    2. Place it on the timeline and edit; add something that requires rendering.

    3. Export as a QT Ref. file (it doesn't seem to matter if you specify AIFF or WAVE for the audio output).

    4. Try and play the .MOV file with various players.

On my system, none of the players (QT, VLC, Media Classic, etc.) are able to play the resulting file, nor can Squeeze import and transcode.

Hi Dave, nice to see you

About your probs , this is a missing codec prob, you might either need to buy an extra codec or transcode to DNx before sending out the QT ref .

About the audio, qT refs can be exported without creating extra audio files so you don´t actually need to have that box checked .

Calibrated, right? Pretty steep prices if you ask me. $90 MAC, $150 PC?

I could have said "no need for the codec if you mixdown" :)

Correct and I have seen a lot of users very satisfied with this workflow , working directly off captured tapes, I have seen comments as " worth every penny "

There is never only one way to do it you know.

For my own BD productions DNxHd is what counts however

edited ..  the price seems a bit high however , haven´t checked for a while , are you sure about this price

I always export as .m2t(transport stream) for TV shows where the time is a big matter.

The process of the export is not as fast as QT ref or QT movie (when you are on DNxHD and SAS).

But the resulting file is fine (not like DNxHD  but overall good) and small in size in case

    you need to archive it.

Now if it's a production that you have more time you can go the DNxHD route.

Dave, happy to see you around.

Re: HDV and QT Reference File Issues (maybe)

I know I've been quiet for a while (I have been lurking). But I'm getting active again.

I particularly want to use QT Ref. files so as to save the disk space. I have a lot of tapes to process, and having to manage temporary .M2T files manually is rather annoying (this is what I'm currently doing).

If a 3rd party CODEC is required to use the QT Ref. workflow, then it needs to be documented in a release note somewhere. Which is really what I was trying to ascertain (I've already sent off a note to Marianna about this).

From my old memory this was introduced in a patch and not a full version, it was just an add to the readme and not so much more advertising about it.

    Hello,

I'm afaraid, HDV is not naturally QT-Ref-able. The Avid gurus can explain this further.

Like mentioned, we normally master to m2t/HDV. We are also looking at full QT-AvidDNXHD as recommended by most.

You can also try transcoding the project/timeline if you want the QTref route. Depending on the length or volume of the project, you can just set and leave it processing overnight...just to relieve the pain of waiting :-)

    Here's our little workflow:

    - CAPTURE HDV via Sony Z1 & Z7
    - IMPORT m2t clips or CAPTURE by HDV Split - awesome free app. I know it's crazy but we've never had better - experience with Avid's HDV tape capture.
    - EDIT
    - EXPORT to m2t

    Enjoy!

When using that mentioned codec it should be, Avid seldom introduces something that doesn´t work

As this anyhow breaks all possibilities to batch capture in a future my prefered workflow instead of this would be to use my Matrox unit and capture directly live off tape into Avid and codecs as prefered .

Re: HDV and QT Reference File Issues (maybe)

So the short answer is that it's a limitation, not well documented, and that I'm going to have to continue to live with exporting to M2T. At least the current version of Sqeeze understands the .m2t extension (previously I had to rename files to .mpg before it could import them).

I think I'm just going to have to start writing the temp. files to a known directory and use a shutdown script to clean the directories for me.

    DStone:

So the short answer is that it's a limitation,

I think it was meant as a feature when it was introduced Dave, in earlier versions you got an error message saying that long gop files wasn´t supported for qT ref exports

    DStone:

     not well documented,

    To that I agree

    DStone:

and that I'm going to have to continue to live with exporting to M2T.

Thinking out loud here, was a while since I was on this version, wouldn´t that give you a mpeg generation loss, my feeling is that Same as Source export would be better if it is allowed , not sure, please tell if it works.
