    Optimus and GTX67m

I am getting a new laptop that has the built in Intel HD3000 graphics and a nVidia 675m video card.

Will MC5.0.4.3 use or have any issue with this running the Optimus technology or is that something that needs to be turned off. I am not sure how the Optimus works but wanted to get some information on it.

    Thanks!!

    Bump.

No comments? Yes I know it is not a "supported" video card but just wondering on the whole Optimus technology.

    Jeff,

You could always download a trial version and install it.  See how or "IF" it works.

I might be wrong, but I thought Optimus works with two or more or a combination of Quadro / Tesla Tech.

Ok I will look more that way. I did find there is a way in the nVidia set up to tell it to always use the dedicated graphic card.

It is not something I can download at this point as it comes as part of the drivers for the GTX675m on the new laptop.

MC doesn't use the Optimus just the Nvidia.

But the 6x could be a problem.

    Re: Optimus and GTX67m

The Avid-supported Lenovo w530 has Optimus technology.

I have the (not (yet?) supported) Dell Precision M4700 with Optimus, and frankly I don't fully understand how the adverted "automatic" switching between the GPU and the IGP is supposed to work with MC (or Symphony in my case).

It would be great if Avid could publish a tech note about how to configure Optimus-enabled laptops with MC/Sy: should Optimus be completely disabled in the BIOS ? Or is the automatic switching working so transparently that MC just ignores it and merrily sends calls to the Quadro GPU (but then, I don't understand what I see in the MC/Sy console, as described here)

Oh and BTW, is the Avid-supported nVidia driver 275.89 supporting Optimus ?

According to the nVidia website, the 275.89 driver doesn't support the K2000 series GPU...What is the nVidia driver tested by Avid/supported with e.g. the approved Lenovo w530 with K2000 GPU ?

    Re: Optimus and GTX67m

I see the DELL Precision M4700, with Intel HD 4000 / NVidia K1000M or K2000M, is now on the list of supported HW (for 6.5) - like other OPTIMUS-enabled laptops.
While I'm still on 6.0, the following questions may still be valid with 6.5:

As explained in my previous post here, is there a tech note that would describe how to configure laptops with OPTIMUS technology for MC ?
So far, I had disabled OPTIMUS in the BIOS because "strange symptoms" happened when using MC/Sy 6.0 with OPTIMUS enabled (default).
Also, OPTIMUS requires a more recent nVidia driver than the one 6.0 / 6.5 support...

So I would like to know how the Avid-tested M4700 "MC reference" config looks like: "old" nVidia driver (and hence, OPTIMUS disabled), or current WHQL nVidia driver with OPTIMUS support....

    Thanks

BenoitM, I'm on the same boat as you. Just bought a Dell Precision M6700 (receiving it tomorrow...) and I could not find any info about how to setup not only Optimus, but everthing else, including driver versions.

I posted questions on the Symphony forum a couple of times and have not been helped. My main issue is if the laptop will actually work with the AJA IO Express.

    Re: Optimus and GTX67m

Just adding some information here, got my laptop last week and did some preliminary tests (check my sig for specs).

Laptop works great with Symphony 6.5.2, incredibly fast, best screen I have ever seen. After calibrated and using the PremierColor software, I can choose between quite a few color settings, including NTSC, REC709 and DCI P3. Avid is responsive, with no problems so far.

Now, AJA IO Express does not work at all. Just like the series before (M6600), after a couple of minutes of use the express card disconnects suddenly, does not even show an error or anything. I'm gonna try to talk to AJA for a few more days, but I'll probably have to sell it and look for another solution. Blackmagic does not seem to approve Dell machines either, so it's gonna be a blind guess between Matrox and Blackmagic.

I have not tried any of the HP Elitebook series; I read reviews online and Avid approved laptops' chart gives an edge to HP, but I definitely got a much better deal on price (almost 2 grand cheaper than HP) and everybody I talked to about support recommended Dell.

Overall, I definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a great laptop with lots of expandability and ease to upgrade. Be aware of the gotchas, though, related to external monitoring boxes. If anyone has any experiences with the Precision series and Blackmagic/Matrox boxes, let me know.

That's good to know, vpcmike. How's the behavior of the latest drivers working with CC and trimming?

    Hi Gustavo Mendes.

Is your M6700 is still not working with AJA IO express? Or maybe you have solved this problem somehow?
Do you have tried it with some other HW, for example Black Magick UltraStudio SDI (USB3.0)?

    Re: Optimus and GTX67m

I talked to AJA for quite a few days about it, and, in the end, they said they could not troubleshoot it because they did not have a test machine available.

My solution was to buy a Matrox MXO2 Mini Max on ebay.... it is working flawlessly since the day i installed it. I still have my IO Express, though, couldn't find a buyer, so I'm keeping it for now.

I personally haven't tested any Blackmagic products, but most forums I visited had people complaining about incompatibilities with Dell's USB 3 ports, so I decided not to risk it. I would love to buy a USB UltraScope, if anyone could confirm it works with my laptop model....

    Re: Optimus and GTX67m

I have M6600 and the same problem with AJA.

Marianna says M6700 works properly with AJA avid lab. I got the message from her.

I just bought a BlackMagic Ultra Studio SDI (USB 3.0) and I'm happy. This model is powered from the USB port. Sadly BM works only in 1080/50i. Caution! BM requires Renesas USB 3.0 controller. My M6600 is exactly the same, but the M6700 has the Intel controller on your chipset.
