Re: MC 6 & 6.01 freezes and white screens.

I've installed yesterday an HP xw9400 which has a nvidia 5500 and it shows the same behavior: At  MC startup the system will give you a BSOD.I've managed to solve it by commenting all the supported cards fields, you will find those in QualifiedGpuBoards.txt

Then, as the system had an older AJA Xena Card, reported as KONA3 by OS and aja drivers, I've been hit by the playback bug: as soon as you hit play the system will freeze. Disabling the AJA board make the system happy

    Well,

Someone must have seen what I was posting, when I pressed POST my thread bombed out, strange.

Anyway just as well, end of ten page  rant minus rant.

I am glad there are enough of us with this issue that something might get done and fast.

Re: MC 6 & 6.01 freezes and white screens.

I wonder if it is not something to do with the way Avid caches data and the way information is used in the buffer. There is only 2G of memory being cached while playing timeline. When I copy files this goes up to 8G.

Once I play the timeline once most the problems not all seem to disappear with the BM Multibridge Eclipse.

I have also posted this in the MXO2 go slow thread.

Re: MC 6 & 6.01 freezes and white screens.

    It gets worse.

I have now tried a completly different hardware config with exactly the same problems!!

New system - AMD quad, FX1400, Matrox Mini.  Again works fine without the BOB but with the matrox mini connected, plays for about 1/4 sec then crashes.

I have have two systems that are unusable -  Avid??

Re: MC 6 & 6.01 freezes and white screens.

So there we have it.  Lots of folk with lots of different kit all having the same issues.  It appears the only thing we all have i common is MC6, so I guess that's where the problem lies?  I haven't had time to research all the potential solution as the machine is currently in use but what I can say is that for the past two days I've changed the video output resolution before I touch anything else and so far, got no white outs!

I've emailed a couple of folk at Avid and eagerly await a response, I'm sure we'll hear more on this one.......

Yes, Ian, that looks like the common factor.

But I think that there are obviously a variety of reasons why the BSOD is being triggered.

Did you try rolling back the drivers as I suggested?
It might work in your case, as your video card is one of the ones that had problems with the newer drivers.

    Hi Douglas

I have tried 2 cards fx 3700 and fx 1400 with various drivers - all variations showing the same problems.

The next thing I am going to try is ripping out the graphics card altogether - see if that works!

Haven’t had the chance, spend the first hour of the day checking other drivers (chipset etc) on the system.  Thanks for reminding me on that one, if I don’t get the chance today I’ll try that 1st thing Monday.  As BSOD for me occurs with Nvid 275.89 when MC loads the clip viewers I would guess that to be a video overlay issue?  Nvid 276.82 on the other hand doesn’t BSOD but does give random white outs, might be just luck I havent had one for two days......  I’ll load the older drivers when I can get on the machine.

    Thanks Douglas,

    Ian Stockdale.

    Jon,

My suggestion about the older drivers was meant for Ian, as he has a card witha xx50 number.

Your two cards are x700 and x400, so I would not expect the older driver would likely be any help to you.

I know about the xx50 problem, as I have a machine here with a 3500 card. It had BSOD problems until I rolled back to the older driver.

I hope you also find a solution to your problem.
    Good luck.

    Douglas

Re: MC 6 & 6.01 freezes and white screens.

Well I got two white screen free days last week, switched on this morning, swapped output resolution around with crossed fingers only to get two white screens ina row.  So I tried Douglas's solution of the 'old drivers', version 190.38, might be wrong on this as there may be 'parrallel versions'(?) but these appear to be GeForce drivers which work but..........gave a white out on first MC load.

An Avid person replied to my email:

'In your case while not the answer you want to hear the fact is the xw8400 is not a supported system, for multiple reason, no the least being it is not even supported by HP for Win 7 64'

Whilst that may shoot my case down, it obviously doesn't address the problem that those of you have who have 'Current Certified Systems' that are encountering the same issues.  Is there anything we haven't tried?

I ran the MS Win 7 compatabilty programme just to see how far off the mark my workstation is but apart from a couple of old progs like PSP, it all looks and works fine with only 1 issue, dot.net 1.1

A couple of things I did notice which may or may not be part of the problems were QT 7.7.1 is 32 bit and dot.net 1.1 is installed and Win7Comp says this IS incompatable with win 7 64.........Any further thoughts?

    Update on previous......

190.38 ddriver package led to warning red lines above timeline = dropped frames.

I have a HP xw8600-Quadro FX 3700-Windows 7-MC 6.0 and I have the issues.  This is still a qualified system.

    Kevin,

I have pointed out that there appear to be lots of people like yourself in my emails to folk at Avid, it appears that's the bit they don't read?  Only HP xw8400 stands out!

    drbgaijin:

    Hello Ian,

I believe that the NVidia Quadro cards with an x500 number can have issues with the newer drivers in combination with MC6.
I have an Nvidia Quadro 3500 and another machine with an Nvidia Quadro 3700 card. The 3700 runs well with the supplied drivers, but the 3500 crashes.
I rolled back to the 190.38 drivers for the 3500 card and all works well there too.

    Try installing the 190.38 drivers.

    REgards,
    Douglas

    Thanks Douglas

That solution works for me with a QuadroFX 1500 GPU. However I understand peoples confusion and the lack of clarity from Avid. Previously 275.89 worked with version 5.5 and version 6 but causes BSOD where it initialises Composer window with version 6.01. It sure sounds like something Avid broke! No mention in the release notes etc...

Can we go back to the way audio nodes used to be selected? Please? ie if you have audio nodes at the same time on selected tracks; then selecting 1 audio node selects them all at that time. Having to shift select nodes or add an in and out is time consuming and counter productive. At least make it an option.

    OK - Try this one:

Connect a good video source to the BOB, run MC. before doing anything, Digitize a clip and play it back

works for me every time - seems the BOB needs to "see" the video input.

Note.  video input must be set to the source and V a1 a2 enabled.
