    Questions about exporting MXF OP1a

    Hi there!

Is it possible to export an MXF OP1a file (IMX 30) with 4 channels of audio? As I cannot find such option in MXF export settings, the outcome is always 8 audio channels.

I have to preapare a commecial for TV station (RTL Nederland) and they request a MXF file with 4 audio channels (Ch 1 & 2 - programme sound, Ch 3 & 4 muted). I'm not sure if they will accept file with 8 channels.

    And one more thing...

If I have video prepared in Avid in MPEG 30 format (a video mixdown) and I export that video as MXF IMX 30, does Avid export 'same as source' way (no recompression - just re-wrapping) or does full re-coding to IMX 30 again (even if the source and export formats match)?

    Thanks!

if you use the 24bit audio bit depth - it will be 4 channels (and 16 bit = 8 channels)

    Just checked and it works.

I've already sent the 8-channel version to them and they accepted it, so i guess it's only important to have at least 4 audio channels.

    Thanks!

Re: Questions about exporting MXF OP1a

I have the exact same problem. I need to deliver a MXF (IMX 30) with 4 audio channels.
I tried the 16bit 24bit option (in which the 24bit option delivers 4 audio chanels 2F2R)
but the TV station still has some problems with the processing of the file.

This problem occured since working with Avid MC6. When I was working on much older versions
of Avid, 16bit mxf export was fine and created 4 chanels of audio.

Is there any way to create good mxf files with 4 channels of audio?

Don't know if it's the same problem? but one of the TV stations I deliver to have had problems accepting MXF from MC6.

Open the MXF in VLC. screen a few minutes. If it looks ok then my suggestion may not be helpfull...

Are you working with quicktimes that came from final cut och working in resolution 1:1 then you could try to do a videomixdown... or just try a mixdown anyways....

    hope it helps

I am not working with quicktimes that came from final cut and i always make a video & audio mixdown.
The MXF files work fine, except for the fact that they contain 8 audio tracks and i only want 4.

ITV.com in the UK need 2 channels - any ideas on that one?  Also it needs a stereo mix so I guess it needs a mixdown as it just seems to export track for track while losing ang pan information.

Re: Questions about exporting MXF OP1a

latest news... talked with a friend today... he said as long as there is only two tracks (1 stereopair) it should be ok just export. But if there are more tracks than two you have to create empty audiotracks in your time line for it to work...

so if you have 2 tracks of pgm sound and maybe 2 tracks of international version then you must create 4 empty tracks in the timeline.....

not sure this helps. but might help someone who finds this thread.

you could also try to create 6 empty tracks if you only got 2 tracks with audio

Thanks for the reply.  I can confirm that you are right.  If you have just 2 tracks in the timeline, only 2 tracks are in the exported file.
