No MC 6 AMA plug-ins for Sony or Canon at launch

    Just got word from Marianna:

    Plug-In’s:

Compatible Sony and Canon AMA plug-ins are not yet available but will be coming soon from Sony and Canon (likely arriving in January 2012)

Those of who use AMA plug-ins from those manufacturers might want to hold off on installing MC 6 until they release 64-bit versions.

(As you may know, Sony stands for "Soon, Only Not Yet".)

Must think of something clever to go here...

Do we know which plug-ins -

I'm assuming this will be XDCam family for Sony and the MPEG-2 MXF for Canon.

This will be a shame as much of my footage still comes from EX3's.

Yet another reason to dual-boot.  Import that footage using v5.5, then switch to v6 for editing.

Is v6 that good, that it's worth that effort?

    See a post I made here: http://community.avid.com/forums/t/102649.aspx

Chris Bove ( ak PixelMonkey  ) should be posting his workflow recommendations to that site today but for those of you reading this thread here is what he will be posting later today.

Have XDCAM?  Use Avid AMA *OR* SONY's FREE Browser software!

In addition to the soon-to-be-released SONY AMA plug-ins for Media Composer 6, Symphony 6, and News Cutter 10, an excellent alternative method for working with SONY XDCam footage is to utilize SONY’s free XDCam Browser software.  Here’s the workflow:

    1.       Download and install the browsing software from SONY’s website (see links below).

    2.       Navigate in the browsing software to the drive containing the XDCam files, and click on the BPAV folder.  The clips will populate in the browsing software.

    3.       Select All.  Export them all by converting them to anything you want to work with (including raw MXF files) to wherever you like on your computer.  (Note: Don’t place these in the AvidMediaFiles/MXF/1 file structure.  These work a little different and need to be imported fresh by your system).

Although Avid AMA rocks, I actually prefer this method to because you can use the SONY browser to decide which clips you want and then actually import them (which is still a little more stable method than AMA anyway).

Depends.  There are things that v6 does that v5.5 won't (AVCHD, RED EPIC).  There are things v5.5 does that v6 won't right away, not to mention there will be a few bugs yet to work out.

If you're mission ciritcal, I always think it's worth dual-booting...we've been doing it for years.  No downtime if a new release doesn't quite live up to expectations...you just bounce back to the previous version.

And then I just ping-pong back and forth between the two drives.  So, for example, when the next major release comes out (6.5 or 7.0 or whatever) I erase my 5.5 drive and leave my 6.0 intact.

    Ah, this is PC only.

I guess us Mac users will have to wait - we're used to it.

Yup your right.  In Safari, I had to type "mac" into the sony search box to reveal the download.
